Collection: Vegetal, Vitreous

The frit de verre monoprints in this collection are impressions of plants harvested in New Orleans and Stanwood, Washington. The delicate marks of the plants were captured in a thin layer of fused glass powder using a lost wax process, then manipulated by (gloved) hand while hot in the kiln. The results comprise a gestural ephemeral archive.

For this show, Caitlin paired the plant prints with a series of cast glass vessels made of recycled bottle glass. The thick, textured forms are from her ‘mothermold series’— she made all of them by pouring molten glass into the same two-part wooden mold, then opening the mold and manipulating the glass while still hot to create the shapes. She made the thinner, rolled and folded forms by pouring glass over ferns on a graphite slab, then rolling the glass up.

Vegetal, Vitreous was first shown as a solo show at Whereyart Gallery on Royal Street in New Orleans, Nov 2024-Jan 2025.
