Swallows a sign of luck. They are revered and protected (not hunted) across most cultures and throughout time. Harming Swallow is considered back luck. Since ancient Roman times Swallow has been a symbol sacrifice, new beginnings, and of protection in sorrow, particularly in association with lost children.
Swallows warns us when storms are coming and are harbingers of spring. Swallow is symbolic of hope, fertility and renewal of life.
When a sailor has a Swallow tattoo, it indicates he has traveled more than 5,000 nautical miles. It is considered a symbol of luck, for if he drowns, Swallow will carry his soul to safety. For fighters and working class Englishmen, Swallow tattoos are typically inked on knuckles as a sign of strength and swiftness. Swallow warns us to choose our battles, and reminds us that not every situation warrants confrontation or change. Swallow reminds us to instead seek peace and joy.
