Maya's Veil

Maya's Veil

kiln formed glass, copper, wood

74" x 14" x 20"

In Indian philosophies, Maya represents cosmic illusion, including the illusion of permanence, that individuals are independent from their ecosystems, and that our ever-evolving desires can be satisfied. Maya makes us believe the physical world is real and obscures the ultimate spiritual reality, or void, which causes suffering. To achieve enlightenment, we must see beyond the duality and multiplicity, past the Veil of Maya. In our daily lives, we catch glimpses of the veil, reminders that the static physical world is not all that exists. I use wisps of clear thin degrading glass and weave to symbolize tears in the fabric of the physical plane.
