Manifold

Manifold

kiln formed glass, found steel

10" x 12" x 16"

Here the broom is a book, each glass page 'woven' in a series of kiln firings, and formed while hot by flipping the pages into an active spray.

My investigation of brooms revealed formal and functional connections between brooms and books. Both are vessels. They are objects of stewardship that release and contain. Both tools tend society; both are constructed by binding individual parts together. In relinquishing the distinction between books and brooms, I find myself reading the release-and-become pattern throughout nature, particularly in plant matter, mineral deposits, and fire.

The sharp clarity of the glass in this sculpture softens the rusty steel, making it appear like pliable leather.
