Black Cohosh Root Glass Print

Black Cohosh Root Glass Print

Kiln-formed frit de verre

17in x 12in x 3.5in

Hangs with wooden french cleat, provided.

Like all of the plants referenced in this exhibition, Black Cohosh is an ally of human reproductive agency. To make this glass print, Black Cohosh root was pressed into clay. A wax positive is made from the clay, and a plaster-silica mold is made from the wax. Glass powder was kiln-fused over the plaster-silica molds, then the glass ‘prints’ were manipulated while hot in the kiln, an expression of human agency and intervention.

I think of this process as mark making and printmaking— I can sometimes use the same plaster mold more than once, but it degrades with each firing, and the application of the powdered glass is variable, so just as every leaf of a plant is unique, each glass page is a monoprint.
